Around ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously introverted and quiet self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what have I discovered this past year, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was the process of making friends. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting aspects of starting university, and if you are an incoming student, it might rank as one of your greatest worries. On my initial day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to class starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. However, today I can assert with confidence that I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever had, here at this university and in this program. I’ve cultivated a second family at Imperial, and it all began with some casual conversations with others in comparable positions. So, what did I take away from this experience? I learned that making a bold move at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be countless opportunities and events designed to break the ice and facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that if there’s one thing to be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals in the course and the university, you are sure to encounter those who share your interests.

Another obstacle was the sheer volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a notable increase from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even steeper jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting isn’t always easy on your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several factors aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the realization that everyone is in the same situation. If something doesn’t make sense to you, I can practically assure you that there are others who feel the same. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for help from both your classmates and the staff!

This brings me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and acknowledge that students face challenges. They show compassion towards students and maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I mentioned taking leaps earlier; I did take a leap at the year’s beginning by becoming a year well-being representative. This role granted me the chance to familiarize myself with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for your personal growth! My primary takeaway from this facet of university life is to fully leverage the assistance that is available to you. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has illustrated to me that feelings of anxiety, whether before or during university, are nearly always unfounded and can be eased by the various support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never truly alone, and it has taught me how to find enjoyment amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
