Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding the journey ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my studies in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not a feat my previously introverted and reserved self was accustomed to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and considerable enjoyment. But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current position?
One of the primary and most intimidating obstacles was forging friendships. This aspect of university life is frequently one of the most intimidating ones, and for prospective students, it might be a significant worry. On my first day settling into my accommodation, just days before classes started, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, daunted by the prospect of stepping outside and meeting others. However, today I can assertively say I’ve formed some of the most remarkable friendships here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, initiating from casual conversations with those in similar positions. So, what have I realized? Taking a chance at the beginning of the year is ideal. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! Numerous opportunities for ice-breaking and events will be available to facilitate connections with others. Furthermore, if you can embody any quality, be yourself. With the wide array of unique individuals throughout the course and university, you’re certain to encounter individuals who resonate with you.
Another challenge involved the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was a clear escalation from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even more significant jump from the first term to the second. Being thrown into such an atmosphere can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might witness others studying and feel inferior. Several strategies assisted me in navigating that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something is unclear to you, I can nearly assure you that others are equally perplexed. Thus, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp during your first year. Reach out to your peers and the faculty for support!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are invested in your success and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They relate to students and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year concerning our challenges. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I took one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are various ways to familiarize yourself with faculty, and it is one of the most advantageous actions you can take for your own benefit! My primary takeaway from this facet of university life is to make the most of the available assistance. You can never receive too much!
In summary, this year has imparted to me that anxious feelings, both leading up to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated through the various support resources available from both staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never truly alone and taught me how to relish my time amidst the pressures of examinations and deadlines.
