Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my earlier timid self was familiar with. Looking back now, I perceive a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This aspect of commencing university is often one of the most fear-inducing, and if you’re an incoming student, it may weigh heavily on your mind. On the day I moved into my dorm, just a few days ahead of classes, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Today, I’m thrilled to state that I’ve made some of the most incredible friends at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all thanks to engaging in small conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what have I come to understand? At the start of the year, it’s important to take a leap of faith. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaker events are in place to facilitate connections with others. Moreover, remember to simply be yourself. With such a diverse crowd throughout the course and university, you are sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was significant, and there was an even steeper rise from the first to the second term. Being in such an atmosphere can be a test for your self-esteem; you might feel inferior compared to your peers. What aided me was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something is unclear to you, there’s a good chance others are clueless as well. Thus, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could be the most vital lesson of the first year. Reach out to both peers and faculty for support!

This leads to my next point. The staff in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize the challenges that students encounter. They are understanding and maintain ongoing communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t take advantage of the pastoral support until the year was drawing to a close, but I wish I had sought it out earlier. I spoke about taking risks before – I took one by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to connect with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are various opportunities to interact with the faculty, and doing so is one of the most rewarding actions you can take! My primary takeaway is to fully utilize the support available. You can never have too much help!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness about university are generally unfounded and can be mitigated through the assistance provided by both staff and fellow students. I’ve learned that I’m never alone and discovered how to have fun even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
