**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was brimming with nerves, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was about to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being someone who had always been shy and reserved, taking a bold plunge into such a major life transition felt overwhelming. Now, as I reflect on an academic year filled with growth, challenges, and unforgettable experiences, I recognize how much I’ve learned and how far I’ve progressed.
### Conquering the Fear of Forming Friendships
One of the most intimidating obstacles I confronted was forming friendships. For many new students, this is one of the primary concerns about starting university, and I was no exception. On my initial day at student accommodation, just before the term commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too frightened to venture out and introduce myself to others.
Fast forward to now, and I can assert that I’ve made some of the most wonderful friends I’ve ever encountered. My fellow students have become like a second family, and all it required was stepping outside my comfort zone and initiating small conversations with those who were experiencing similar feelings.
What have I learned? Taking that first leap at the year’s onset is essential. If you don’t feel ready or comfortable right away, don’t fret—there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet new people. Most importantly, remain true to yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals at Imperial, you will undoubtedly find those who resonate with your interests and values.
### Managing the Academic Shift
Another substantial challenge was adapting to the increased workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The shift from A-levels to university was significant, and the transition from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed and doubt your abilities when you observe others studying and seemingly thriving.
What aided me through this was the understanding that everyone shares similar struggles. If you’re finding something difficult to grasp, it’s likely that others are as well. The crucial part is to seek help—whether from your peers or the teaching staff. Learning to ask for help is arguably the most valuable skill to cultivate in your first year.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
Speaking of staff, the support from the Materials department has been remarkable. The lecturers and tutors sincerely care about our success and are compassionate toward the obstacles we encounter. They keep lines of communication open throughout the year, addressing our issues and providing guidance.
I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until the year’s end, but I regret not doing so earlier. Taking that step to seek assistance is incredibly important. Early on, I assumed the role of a year well-being representative, which facilitated connections with staff members. This turned out to be an invaluable experience. There are numerous avenues to connect with your lecturers and tutors, and engaging with them can significantly enhance your university journey. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support available—you can never receive too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
This year has shown me that the anxiety I felt prior to starting university—and even throughout the year—was often unfounded. With the extensive support from both staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve learned to strike a balance between the pressures of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and fun, and I’ve developed tremendously as an individual.
Looking back, I feel a sense of pride in how far I’ve come. Starting university may seem like a leap into the unknown, but with the appropriate mindset and support, it can be an extraordinarily fulfilling journey.
