Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about the journey ahead. I was about to embark on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Jumping into the unknown was not something my formerly timid and introverted nature was prepared for. Looking back now, I recognize an academic year rich with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current standing?

One of the initial and most intimidating challenges I encountered was forging friendships. This is certainly one of the more frightening elements of commencing university, and if you are reading this as a prospective student, it might be one of your main worries. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to step out and meet others. However, sitting here today, I can assertively say that I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships of my life here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was engaging in small talk with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I realized that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker opportunities and events designed to help you connect with others. I also learned that if you can embrace one thing, be authentic. With such a diverse group of people across the program and university, you are sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another challenge I needed to navigate was the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and in certain ways, an even more significant shift from the first to the second term. Being immersed in such a setting can sometimes be tough on your confidence; you may observe peers studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me cope with that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you find something perplexing, I can nearly guarantee that at least a handful of others are struggling too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek help. This could be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Seek assistance from your fellow students and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for you to succeed and understand that students face challenges. They relate to students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the academic year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke about taking leaps at the beginning; I did take one by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and this is undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for your own benefit! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to fully leverage the support being made available to you. You can never have too much!

Overall, this year has impressed upon me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are almost always unwarranted and can be eased by the multitude of support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never truly alone, and it has showed me how to have fun while juggling stressors like exams and deadlines.
