Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was just about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a new student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved demeanor was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most frightening elements of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be a significant worry. On my inaugural day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to the start of classes, I spent the whole day in my room, too nervous to venture out and meet anyone. However, today I can assertively state that I’ve formed some of the most incredible friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and in this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in like situations. So, what have I realized? It’s best to take a risk at the start of the year. If you’re not yet ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that being genuine is crucial. With so many diverse individuals in the course and university, you’re sure to find those who connect with you.
Another obstacle was handling the workload and difficulty of the material. There was certainly a jump from A-levels, and an even larger one from the first to the second term. Being in such a setting can be hard on your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. What got me through this was the realization that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If something is unclear to you, there are probably others who are struggling as well. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the most vital lesson to embrace in the first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize the challenges students encounter. They show compassion towards us and keep constant communication throughout the year regarding our issues. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned before about taking risks – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with the faculty, and it’s one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university is to seize the help available. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has revealed to me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are often unwarranted and can be eased by the various support avenues offered by staff and peers. It’s shown me that I’m never truly alone and has taught me how to enjoy my time while managing challenges such as exams and deadlines.
