Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a novice student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my formerly shy and withdrawn self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?
One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most frightening parts of commencing university, and it might be a significant concern for prospective students. On my first day settling into my accommodation, just days ahead of classes, I spent the entire day in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet new people. Today, I can proudly state that I’ve made some of the finest friends here at university and in my course. I’ve built a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar predicaments. What did I discover? I realized that it’s beneficial to take a risk at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaker events will be available to facilitate your connection with others. I also recognized that being authentic is essential. With such a varied group of individuals throughout the course and the university, you’re sure to find those who click with you.
A further challenge was handling the workload and the complexity of the content. There was definitely an increase in difficulty compared to A-levels, particularly transitioning from the first to the second term. Being in such a setting can be tough on your self-esteem; you may feel inferior next to your peers. What helped me was recalling that everyone shares the same experience. If something is unclear to you, it’s likely that others are also struggling. So, don’t hesitate to seek help. This might be the most vital takeaway from the first year. Reach out to friends and faculty for assistance!
This leads me to my next observation. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They are compassionate and keep in touch with us consistently throughout the year. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I mentioned taking risks before – I took one at the outset by serving as a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff, which is invaluable. There are numerous opportunities to engage with the staff, and it’s one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself! My primary message is to capitalize on the assistance offered. You can never have too much support!
In summary, this year has demonstrated to me that feelings of nervousness regarding university are often baseless and can be relieved with the resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never truly alone and has taught me how to have fun despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
