Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, anxiety, and uncertainty regarding the path ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Immersing myself in the unfamiliar was not something my once shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year rich with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current status?
One of the earliest and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of entering university, and if you’re a future student perusing this, it might rank high on your list of worries. On my first day of settling into my living quarters, a few days prior to the term kicking off, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Today, I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals in similar predicaments. So, what did I glean from this? I learned that it’s beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not feeling prepared or at ease, fret not! Numerous ice-breaking chances and events will be available to help you bond with others. I also found that if you can embody one quality, be true to yourself. With such a diverse range of individuals throughout the course and the university, you are sure to encounter people who resonate with you.
Another challenge was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrown into such a setting can often unsettle your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me manage that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If you find something perplexing, I can nearly assure you others are struggling too. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the most crucial skill to master in the first year. Reach out for help from your fellow students and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face challenges. They empathize with us and maintain open lines of communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I made one at the year’s outset by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is immensely valuable. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the finest steps you can take for your benefit! My primary takeaway from this facet of university life is to capitalize on the assistance being extended to you. You can never possess too much support!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated through the various support options provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and has illustrated how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
