By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was coming next. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Plunging into the unknown wasn’t something my formerly timid and reserved personality was accustomed to. Reflecting back, I see a year packed with personal growth, obstacles, and enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted to me, and what is my current situation?

One of the initial and most intimidating challenges was establishing friendships. This is certainly a daunting task at the beginning of university, and for any prospective student, it might be a major concern. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days ahead of the term’s commencement, I spent the entire day tucked away in my room, daunted by the thought of stepping out and greeting others. Today, I can proudly assert that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced, right here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what have I taken away from this? It’s always advantageous to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t worry! There will be innumerable ice-breaker chances and events designed to facilitate your engagement with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, be authentic. There are countless diverse individuals throughout the course and university; you’re bound to connect with someone like you.

Another challenge was dealing with the intensity of the workload and content difficulty. There was certainly a shift from A-levels, and in many ways, an even more significant change from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. Several factors helped me overcome that sensation, one being the reassurance that everyone is facing similar struggles. If you find yourself puzzled by something, I can almost assure you others are too. So, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Seek help from both your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials is remarkable. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They relate to students and maintain continuous communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking risks – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for your own sake! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to capitalize on the assistance you’re provided. You can never have an excess of support!

In general, this year has illustrated to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are typically irrational and can be alleviated by the numerous support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never isolated, and it has taught me how to find enjoyment amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
