Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anticipation and doubt about embarking on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a newcomer. Engaging in something unfamiliar was quite out of character for my previously reserved nature. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, hurdles, and enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?
One of the primary and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This often ranks as a significant worry for new university entrants. On my first day at my residence, I spent the whole day in my room, too fearful to interact with others. Now, I can assert that I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships here at the university and within my program. I’ve discovered a supportive community at Imperial, all stemming from initiating casual chats with those in similar circumstances. The takeaway? Make your move at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared, don’t stress—there are abundant ice-breakers and activities designed to facilitate connections. Be your authentic self, and you’ll encounter like-minded individuals.
Another hurdle was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was significant, with an even steeper rise from the first to the second term. This can be challenging for your self-esteem, but keep in mind that everyone shares the same experience. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, it’s likely others are too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This is essential during your first year—reach out for support from peers and faculty!
The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are invested in your success and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They keep us well-informed about our concerns. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I took the plunge by becoming a well-being representative for my year, which allowed me to build connections with staff, a priceless experience. There are numerous opportunities to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the most beneficial steps you can take for yourself. Make the most of the support available—you can never obtain too much!
This year has taught me that feelings of anxiety regarding university are often unfounded and can be alleviated by the support offered by staff and fellow students. I’ve realized I’m not alone and how to find joy in my life in spite of pressures like exams and deadlines.
