Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I felt apprehensive and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar wasn’t something my previously reserved self was used to. Reflecting now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights did this year offer, and what is my current stance?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This aspect is frequently one of the most daunting when entering university, and for any prospective student, it may pose a significant worry. On my moving day, just days prior to the beginning of the term, I spent the whole day in my room, too frightened to venture out and meet others. However, today, I can assertively say I’ve formed some of the finest friendships at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all initiated by casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I take away from this? I learned that taking a courageous step at the beginning of the year is vital. If you’re not prepared or comfortable, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaker events to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that being true to yourself is essential. With a diverse array of individuals across the course and university, you’re likely to encounter like-minded people.

Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was indeed significant, and in some respects, there was an even greater leap from the first to the second term. Being in such an environment can challenge your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few things assisted me during this time, one being the recognition that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If you find something perplexing, I can almost assure you that others are as well. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out to peers and staff!

This brings me to my next point. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the difficulties students encounter. They empathize with students and consistently communicate regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully make use of the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to familiarize myself with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to make the most of the resources available. You can never have too much help!

Ultimately, this year has shown me that anxious feelings about university are often baseless and can be eased with the support provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to find joy despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
