By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt nervous and uncertain about what lay ahead as I embarked on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Jumping into the unfamiliar was not something my previously reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This aspect often stands out as one of the most unnerving parts of starting university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be a significant worry. On the initial day of my stay in the accommodations, just prior to the term beginning, I spent the entire day in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Now, I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the best friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all beginning with light conversation with others in similar circumstances. What have I discovered? Taking a chance at the beginning of the year is crucial. Don’t fret if you’re not prepared! There are numerous ice-breaking events designed to help you connect with others. Also, be true to yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals at the university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the challenges presented by the course material. There was a considerable increase from A-levels, and even more so between the first and second term. Being in such an environment can test your confidence; you may feel inferior compared to peers. Keep in mind, everyone shares the same experience. If you find yourself confused, chances are others are too. Therefore, do not hesitate to seek assistance. This could be the most vital lesson of the first year. Reach out to classmates and staff for support!

This brings me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize the challenges that students encounter. They show empathy and keep communication open with us throughout the academic year. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I regret not doing so earlier. I mentioned taking risks – I took a leap by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with the staff, which is invaluable. There are multiple avenues to engage with faculty, and it is one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself! My key lesson is to seize the assistance provided. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has demonstrated that apprehensive feelings about university are usually unfounded and can be eased by the support available from both staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and has taught me how to have fun despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
