Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Engaging with the unfamiliar wasn’t something my formerly reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, trials, and enjoyment! But what have I gained, and what is my current status?

One of the initial challenges involved forming friendships, a formidable part of commencing university. If you are a prospective student, this might be a significant worry for you. On my very first day moving into my accommodation, I spent the whole day in my room, feeling too daunted to venture out and interact with others. Now, I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the best friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others experiencing similar situations. I learned that taking a jump at the beginning of the year is the best approach. If you feel unprepared, don’t fret! There are numerous ice-breaker events available to assist you in connecting with others. Additionally, be authentic. With such a diverse group of individuals, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was managing the workload and the complexity of the content. There was a noticeable increase from A-levels, and an even larger leap from the first to the second term. Being in such an environment can test your confidence; you may feel insufficient compared to your peers. Keep in mind, everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, likely, others are too. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This is essential during the first year. Reach out to classmates and faculty!

The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They show understanding and keep communication open regarding our concerns. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done it earlier. I took the plunge by becoming a year well-being representative, which allowed me to connect with the staff, a priceless experience. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and it’s among the best actions you can take! My key takeaway is to fully utilize the available support. It’s never too much!

This year has shown me that feelings of anxiety about university are frequently baseless and can be eased through the support provided by staff and fellow students. I’ve realized I am never truly alone and have learned how to find enjoyment despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
