Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety and doubt about embarking on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously reserved self was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently a pressing concern for newcomers to university. On the day I moved into my accommodations, I spent the entire time in my room, too shy to venture out and meet others. Now, I can proudly say I’ve made some incredible friends here, creating a second family at Imperial. It all began with casual conversations with individuals in the same position. The main takeaway? Make an effort at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared, don’t fret; there are numerous ice-breaker activities available to help you connect. Just be yourself, and you’ll attract those who resonate with you.

An additional challenge was the workload and the complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels was significant, and the switch from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inadequate when you observe others studying diligently. Keep in mind, everyone shares the same struggles. If something is unclear to you, it’s likely unclear to others as well. So, don’t hesitate to seek help. This is essential during your first year. Reach out to fellow students and staff!

The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They keep open lines of communication regarding our concerns throughout the year. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had acted sooner. I made a bold move by becoming a year well-being representative, which allowed me to connect with faculty. Establishing relationships with staff is invaluable, and there are various ways to do so. Make the most of the support available; you can’t have too much!

This year has shown me that feelings of anxiety regarding university are often unfounded and can be eased with support from both staff and peers. I’ve realized I am never alone and how to have fun despite the pressures from exams and deadlines.
