Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into unfamiliar territory was not something my previously introverted and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided, and where do I find myself now?

One of the primary and most intimidating challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more nerve-wracking elements of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as a potential student, it may be one of your foremost worries. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days before the semester started, I spent the entire day hiding in my room, far too daunted to step outside and meet people. However, reflecting on today, I can confidently assert that I have made some of the best friends I’ve had at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with engaging in small talk with those in similar circumstances. So, what did I take away from this? I discovered that it’s always advantageous to take a leap at the commencement of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker opportunities and events to aid you in connecting with others. I also gleaned that above all, be yourself. With a plethora of diverse individuals across the program and campus, you’re sure to find those who share your interests.

An additional challenge was the volume of work and complexity of the content. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere isn’t always easy on your self-confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies assisted me in overcoming that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you don’t comprehend something, I can almost assure you that others are encountering difficulties too. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn during your first year. Reach out to your fellow students and faculty for help!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are amazing. They genuinely want you to succeed and understand that students encounter hurdles. They empathize with students and maintain consistent communication with us regarding our challenges throughout the year. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the year was concluding, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is extremely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s certainly one of the best investments you can make for yourself! My main takeaway regarding this aspect of university is to seize the available help. You can never have too much of it!

All in all, this year has enlightened me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be eased with the numerous support resources provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has demonstrated how to have fun while navigating stressors such as exams and deadlines.
