Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I experienced feelings of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Diving into the unknown wasn’t something my formerly introverted and reserved self was accustomed to. Reflecting on this past academic year, I recognize a journey filled with personal growth, obstacles, and enjoyment! So, what lessons has this year imparted, and where do I find myself now?

One of the initial and most nerve-wracking obstacles was forming friendships. This is unquestionably one of the more intimidating aspects of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it might be one of your primary concerns. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of classes, I spent an entire day sequestered in my room because I felt too daunted to step out and greet people. As I sit here today, I can assertively say I have forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever known, here at this university and in this program. I’ve found a second family at Imperial, and all it took was engaging in casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I found that it’s always beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not quite feeling ready or at ease, don’t be concerned! There will be countless opportunities and events designed to facilitate interactions with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one quality, let it be authenticity. With so many diverse individuals within the program and the university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the sheer volume of work and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was significant, and in certain respects, the leap from the first term to the second was even greater. Being immersed in such an environment can be difficult for your self-esteem; you may witness others studying and start to feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate that feeling, one being the reassurance that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If there’s something you don’t grasp, I can virtually assure you that several others are in the same position. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to take away from your first year. Reach out for help from your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize the hardships students face. They empathize, maintaining consistent communication with us throughout the year about our concerns. I didn’t truly take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, and I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking risks – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to build rapport with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and it undoubtedly ranks among the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to fully utilize the assistance being provided. You can never have too much support!

On a broader scale, this year has taught me that feelings of anxiety, whether preceding or during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated by the abundance of support resources available from both staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and has guided me in finding enjoyment alongside the pressures of examinations and deadlines.
