Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was anxious, fearful, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Diving into this new experience wasn’t something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Reflecting back, I recognize a year filled with personal growth, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what lessons did this year impart, and what is my current situation?

One of the initial and most daunting challenges was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more intimidating aspects of commencing university, and if you’re a future student, it may rank among your greatest concerns. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to term’s commencement, I spent the entire day tucked away in my room because I felt too overwhelmed to step out and greet others. However, as I sit here today, I can assertively say I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships I’ve ever known, here at this university and in this program. I’ve developed a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with engaging in simple conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that it’s always advantageous to take a risk at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities and events designed to help you connect with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one trait, it should be authenticity. There are a multitude of diverse individuals throughout the course and university; you are sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a significant shift from A-level studies, and in certain ways, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an environment isn’t always beneficial for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate those sentiments, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating similar challenges as you. If you find something confusing, I can nearly assure you that several others share your confusion. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may well be the most crucial lesson to embrace in your first year. Seek support from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are invested in your success and recognize that students face difficulties. They show understanding and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the academic year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I spoke of taking risks at the outset; I did take one by becoming a well-being representative at the beginning of the year. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are ample opportunities to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My principal insight from this aspect of university life is to make the most of the assistance being provided. You can never have too much help!

In a broader sense, this year revealed to me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are nearly always unfounded and can be mitigated by the extensive support available from staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never isolated, and it has taught me how to have fun amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
