Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the path ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a newcomer. Diving into the unfamiliar was not something my previously shy and reserved personality was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles I encountered was making connections. This certainly ranks as one of the more nerve-wracking elements of starting university, and if you’re considering this as a future student, it might be at the top of your list of worries. On my initial day moving into my housing, a few days ahead of term, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too nervous to step out and introduce myself to others. However, reflecting today, I can proudly state that I’ve befriended some of the finest individuals I’ve ever known, here at this university and in this program. I’ve created a second family at Imperial, and it all started with some casual conversations with fellow students in similar situations. So, what’s the lesson? I discovered that taking a chance at the beginning of the year can be greatly advantageous. If you’re not feeling prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that if you can embody one thing, it should be your true self. With such a diverse group of people in the program and university, you will certainly encounter those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the intensity and complexity of the coursework. It was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even larger transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere isn’t always kind to your self-assurance; you might observe others studying and feel that you don’t measure up. A few strategies helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reassurance that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something is unclear, I can almost guarantee others are confused too. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to internalize during your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from both your fellow students and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely wish for your success and recognize that students face difficulties. They show understanding towards students and keep in touch with us regularly about our concerns throughout the year. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had accessed it earlier. I spoke about taking chances at the beginning; I did take one by serving as a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are many opportunities to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best choices you can make for your own benefit! My key takeaway from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the support available. You can never have too much support!

In a general sense, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often unjustified and can be eased with the myriad of support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment even amid pressures like exams and deadlines.
