Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I see a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I currently stand?

One of the initial and most intimidating obstacles was forging friendships. This is often one of the most daunting parts of commencing university, and if you’re a prospective student, it might be a significant worry. On my first day moving into my residence, just days ahead of the term starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself. Now, I can proudly say I’ve made some wonderful friends here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar situations. What did I discover? It’s beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or comfortable, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking events to assist you in connecting with others. Also, if there’s one thing you should be, it’s yourself. With so many diverse individuals across the course and university, you’re destined to find like-minded peers.

Another hurdle was the workload and complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a noticeable elevation from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can shake your confidence; you might see classmates studying and feel inadequate. What aided me was the reminder that everyone is in a similar situation. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly assure you others don’t either. Therefore, seek assistance. This could be the most crucial lesson to absorb in the first year. Reach out for help from fellow students and faculty!

Speaking of faculty, the Materials department is exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They show understanding and maintain ongoing communication with us regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I took one by becoming a year wellbeing representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is extremely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to interact with faculty, and it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself! My main takeaway is to utilize the assistance provided. You can never have too much support!

In conclusion, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased with the help available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to find joy in spite of stressors like exams and deadlines.
