Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Stepping into the unfamiliar was not something my formerly reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyable moments! But what has this year taught me, and what is my current standing?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This often emerges as one of the most daunting elements of starting college, and if you’re a prospective student, it may weigh heavily on your mind. On my initial day of moving into my dorm, just days prior to classes kicking off, I spent the entire time in my room, too scared to step outside and socialize. Now, I can proudly say I’ve found some of my closest friends at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. What did I realize? Taking a chance at the beginning of the year is key. If you’re not prepared or feel uneasy, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaking activities exist to help you meet others. Also, if you can embody one quality, let it be authenticity. With such a wide range of individuals in the program and university, you’re guaranteed to encounter others like yourself.
Another challenge was the academic demands and intensity of the material. There was a marked increase from A-levels, and an even more significant jump from the first term to the second. Being in such an atmosphere can shake your self-assurance; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. Several strategies aided me through this, one being the reminder that everyone experiences similar struggles. If something confuses you, I can almost assure you that others are likely struggling too. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This could be the most vital lesson of the first year. Reach out to peers and faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They truly want you to thrive and recognize the challenges students encounter. They relate and keep up open communication with us throughout the academic year. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral care until late in the year, but I regret not acting sooner. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is priceless. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and it’s among the best choices you can make for yourself! My principal lesson is to seize the opportunities for assistance provided. You can never have too much support!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be eased with the help available from staff and fellow students. It has demonstrated that I’m never alone and has taught me how to find enjoyment amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
