Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a fresh student. Stepping into the unknown was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?
One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of beginning university, and if you’re a future student, it might be among your primary worries. On my first day settling into my accommodation, days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day retreating in my room, daunted by the thought of stepping outside and meeting others. Today, however, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual chats with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what have I realized? It’s crucial to make a bold move at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There are numerous ice-breaking chances and events to assist you in connecting with others. I’ve also come to understand that if you can be one thing, make sure it’s yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.
An additional challenge was the demanding workload and complexity of the material. There was definitely a transition from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even more significant transition from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can shake your self-assurance; you may observe others studying and feel inferior. A few things supported me through this, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If something is unclear, I can almost assure you others are struggling too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the most vital lesson to take away from the first year. Reach out for help from classmates and instructors!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to succeed and acknowledge that students face challenges. They are sympathetic to our plight and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned taking chances previously – I made one at the start of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to fully utilize the assistance available. You can never have too much help!
In conclusion, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased with the different support resources accessible from staff and fellow students. It’s taught me that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
