Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I perceive a year filled with personal development, hurdles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?
One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more anxious aspects of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a potential student, it could be one of your primary worries. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days before the term started, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too nervous to venture out and introduce myself to others. However, today I can confidently assert that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar positions. So, what did I discover? I found that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that if you can embody one thing, let it be your true self. With such a diverse array of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded peers.
Another hurdle was the amount of work and the difficulty of the material. There was indeed a significant transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater shift from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me cope with that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you struggle with something, I can almost assure you there are others who are also grappling with it. Thus, seek assistance. This might be the single most essential lesson to grasp in your first year. Ask for support from both classmates and staff!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students face difficulties. They empathize with us and keep up continual communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned taking leaps before – I took one at the year’s outset by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s certainly one of the best actions you can take for your own benefit! My primary takeaway from this facet of university life is to make the most of the assistance offered to you. You can never have too much support!
In conclusion, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and throughout university, are frequently unfounded and can be diminished through the various support systems provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to relish my time despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
