Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Jumping into the unknown was not something my previously shy and reserved nature was used to. Looking back at the past academic year, I recognize a journey of personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what knowledge have I gained, and what is my current situation?
One of the first and most intimidating challenges I faced was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting parts of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student reading this, it may rank as one of your significant worries. On my first day of moving into my housing, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too frightened to step out and meet others. Today, however, I can proudly say that I’ve established some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I take away from this? I realized that it’s always beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not fully ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking moments and activities to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that if you can embody one thing, let it be your true self. With so many diverse individuals across the course and university, you are sure to encounter like-minded people.
Another hurdle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater transition from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment is not always easy on your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel less capable. A few things helped me overcome that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, I can nearly promise there are others who are also confused. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to acquire in your first year. Request help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent observation. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They show understanding towards students and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t truly leverage the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had utilized it sooner. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to build relationships with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are many avenues to connect with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for your well-being! My primary lesson from this element of university life is to seize the help you are offered. You can never have too much support!
Overall, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are almost always unwarranted and can be alleviated with the multitude of support options available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has shown me how to find enjoyment amidst stressful situations like exams and deadlines.
