Authored by Dawson La, MEng in Materials Science and Engineering

A little over ten months back, in October 2022, I found myself filled with anxiety and uncertainty as I geared up to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something I, as a previously reserved individual, was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year packed with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This can feel overwhelming when entering university, and for incoming students, it can be a significant worry. On my initial day of moving into my residence, I spent the whole day tucked away in my room, too daunted to meet anyone. Now, I can proudly say I have formed some of the finest friendships here at university and within my program. I have discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar predicaments. I learned that taking the plunge at the beginning of the year can be advantageous. If you’re not quite ready, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breakers and gatherings designed to help you engage with others. Be authentic, and you will come across others just like you.

Another difficulty was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a striking increase from A-levels and an even more significant jump from the first to the second term. This atmosphere can test your confidence; you may feel inadequate when compared to your peers. Keep in mind that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If something is unclear to you, it’s likely others are struggling as well. So, do not hesitate to seek assistance. This is essential during your first year. Reach out for support from classmates and faculty!

The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely care about your success and understand the challenges students face. They engage with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. Although I only utilized the pastoral support towards the end of the year, I wish I had sought it out sooner. I took a step forward by becoming a well-being representative for my year, which facilitated connections with faculty, an invaluable opportunity. There are numerous avenues to get to know the staff, and it’s one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself. Make the most of the support available; you can never receive too much!

This year has impressed upon me that feelings of apprehension about university are often unwarranted and can be eased with backing from staff and fellow students. It revealed to me that I am never truly alone and taught me to find joy amidst the stress of exams and deadlines.
