Ten months back, in October 2022, I found myself filled with anxiety and uncertainty about what lay ahead as I geared up to embark on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Plunging into the unfamiliar was far from what my previously timid self was used to. Upon reflection, I now recognize a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and enjoyment. So, what have I discovered, and what is my current standing?
One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This can be one of the most unsettling parts of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be a significant worry. On my initial day of moving into my residence, a few days ahead of the start of classes, I spent the whole day in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. As of today, I can proudly state that I’ve made some of the finest friends here at university and within my course. I’ve found a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in akin situations. So, what did I take away from this experience? It’s advisable to take a leap at the start of the year. If you’re not quite ready or at ease, that’s perfectly fine! There will be ample ice-breaking activities to assist you in connecting with your peers. Furthermore, if there is one thing you should be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to discover those who resonate with you.
An additional hurdle was the academic workload and difficulty of the content. There was a noticeable leap from A-levels, and an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can take a toll on your confidence; witnessing others study may leave you feeling inadequate. What aided me was the realization that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you’re struggling with something, chances are others are too. So, don’t hesitate to seek help. This may be the most vital lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out to classmates and faculty!
This brings me to my subsequent point. The faculty within Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to flourish and understand the obstacles students encounter. They empathize and ensure open communication throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had engaged with it sooner. I previously mentioned taking jumps—one leap I took was becoming a well-being representative for the year. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary lesson is to make the most of the resources available. You can never receive too much assistance!
In summary, this year has demonstrated to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often unwarranted and can be eased with the support offered by staff and fellow students. It has revealed that I’m never truly alone and has taught me how to relish my experience even amidst the stress of exams and deadlines.
