Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a fresh first-year student. Stepping into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where am I now?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of commencing university, and if you are an incoming student, it may be a significant worry for you. On my first day moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of classes, I remained in my room all day, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. However, today I can assert with confidence that I’ve made some precious friendships here at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all kicked off with a bit of small talk with others in similar situations. So, what have I realized? It’s best to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you aren’t prepared or at ease, don’t concern yourself! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that being authentic is essential. With such a varied group of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to find those who connect with you.

Another challenge was the workload and the difficulty of the material. There was a significant shift from A-levels, and in some instances, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can test your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. What aided me was the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something doesn’t make sense to you, I can almost assure you that others are in the same situation. So, seek assistance. This could be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Ask for help from peers and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the difficulties students encounter. They empathize and keep robust communication with us regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke earlier about taking chances – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to build rapport with the faculty, which is invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with the staff, and it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway is to seize the assistance provided. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be eased with the support available from faculty and fellow students. It has revealed to me that I am never isolated and has taught me how to find enjoyment even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
