Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious, fearful, and uncertain about what was to come. I was on the brink of beginning my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Jumping into the unfamiliar was not something my previously shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current status?

One of the initial and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting elements of starting university, and if you’re reading this as a prospective student, it could be one of your major worries. On my first day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent all day sequestered in my room because I was too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. However, reflecting from this moment, I can assertively state that I’ve cultivated some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced, here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it took was some casual conversation with peers in similar situations. So, what have I learned? I discovered that it’s always best to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events designed to help you engage with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one principle, be yourself. There are so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university; you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the volume of work and complexity of the material. There was certainly a jump from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an environment isn’t always beneficial for your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re confused about something, I can almost assure you that there are others who are equally perplexed. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn in the first year. Request help from your fellow students and the staff!

This brings me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are fantastic. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand that students face challenges. They show compassion towards students and consistently communicate with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I spoke of taking leaps at the start—I embraced one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly valuable. There are multiple avenues to familiarize yourself with staff, and it’s certainly one of the most beneficial choices you can make for yourself! My main takeaway from this facet of university life is to capitalize on the assistance that is offered to you. You can never have too much support!

Generally speaking, this year has shown me that anxious feelings, both leading up to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated by the numerous support resources available from staff and fellow students. It’s taught me that I’m never isolated, and it has shown me how to find enjoyment amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
