Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overcome with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my formerly shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal growth, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This aspect of beginning university can certainly be quite daunting, and if you’re reading this as a prospective student, it might weigh heavily on your mind. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation a few days prior to the term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself to anyone. Today, however, I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships during my time at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, initiated by casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what have I gleaned? I learned that taking a risk at the beginning of the year is beneficial. If you’re feeling unsure or hesitant, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaker events and opportunities will arise to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that, above all, you should just be yourself. With a diverse array of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the workload and the challenge of the material. There was undoubtedly a notable escalation from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can be intimidating for your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. A few strategies assisted me in navigating that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experiences. If something confounds you, I can nearly guarantee there are others who feel the same way. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to embrace in your first year. Reach out to your classmates and the faculty for support!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are genuinely invested in your success and aware that students can face challenges. They sympathize with students and engage in ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support available until later in the year, but I wish I had done so much sooner. I referred to taking risks earlier – I did take one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with staff members, which is tremendously beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary lesson from this facet of university life is to seize the assistance that’s provided. You can never have too much help!

In summary, this year has imparted the understanding that feelings of nervousness, both preceding and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated through the support available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never truly alone, and has demonstrated how to find enjoyment amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
