Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was preparing to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my typically shy and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, hurdles, and a lot of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current state?

One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of entering university, and if you’re reading this as an incoming student, it might be a significant worry for you. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to classes starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, daunted by the prospect of venturing out and introducing myself. However, today I can proudly say that I have formed some of the best friendships here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others facing similar experiences. So, what have I learned? I realized that taking the initiative at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you aren’t feeling ready or at ease, don’t fret! There are numerous ice-breaker activities designed to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that being authentic is essential. With such a diverse array of individuals across the program and university, you’ll surely encounter people who share your interests.

An additional challenge was managing the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a noticeable leap from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even larger transition from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can take a toll on your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. What helped me navigate this was the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If something is unclear, I can almost assure you that others are grappling with the same issue. So, don’t hesitate to seek help. This might be the most vital lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for assistance from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are invested in your success and recognize the challenges students face. They relate to us and maintain ongoing communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had tapped into it earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it is one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself! My principal takeaway from this facet of university life is to fully embrace the support available. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of unease, both before and during university, are often unfounded and can be eased with the support systems provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
