Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months back, in October 2022, I felt anxious, fearful, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was familiar with. Reflecting on the year, I recognize it was filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

One of the initial and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of commencing university, and for prospective students, it may rank among the top concerns. On the day I moved into my housing, just days before classes began, I spent the entire time confined to my room, too daunted to step outside and interact with people. However, I can now declare with confidence that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, initiated by casual conversations with individuals in comparable situations. So, what did I come to understand? I recognized that taking a risk at the year’s commencement is crucial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, fret not! There will be ample ice-breaker occasions and events designed to assist you in connecting with others. Moreover, I learned that if you can embody anything, let it be your true self. Amidst so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you are certain to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the volume of work and complexity of the material. There was indeed a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant transition from the first semester to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several factors aided me in navigating that sensation, one being the assurance that everyone shares similar experiences. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you that others are in the same predicament. Therefore, seek assistance. This could potentially be the most vital lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out for support from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my following point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They desire your success and acknowledge that students face challenges. They show understanding toward students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking risks – I took a significant step at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues available to engage with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the assistance available. You can never receive too much!

In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often unwarranted and can be mitigated by the supportive resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and taught me how to find enjoyment even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
