Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was preparing to embark on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a newcomer. Entering the unfamiliar was not something my previously bashful and introverted self was used to. Looking back, I realize it has been a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it could be a significant worry for you. On my initial day of moving into my residence, just days before classes kicked off, I spent the whole day in my room, daunted by the idea of venturing out and meeting others. Today, however, I can proudly say I have made some of the finest friends at this university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with those in comparable situations. What did I learn? It’s advantageous to make a bold move at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, worry not! There are numerous ice-breaker activities to assist you in connecting with others. Also, if you can embody one thing, be you. With such a diverse group of people spread throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find like-minded companions.

Another obstacle was the heavy workload and complexity of the content. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being in such an atmosphere can be challenging for your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel less competent. A few things aided me through this, one being the acknowledgment that we are all in the same situation. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly guarantee others don’t either. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to take from the first year. Reach out to your classmates and the faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The staff in Materials are fantastic. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They show empathy and keep open lines of communication with us regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully harness the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned making bold moves before – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are various ways to engage with the faculty, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My key takeaway from this part of university is to take full advantage of the assistance available. You can never have an excess!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be mitigated with the support provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to enjoy my experiences despite pressures such as examinations and deadlines.
