Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my formerly shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights did this year provide, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was making new friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting facets of starting university, and if you’re an incoming student, it could be one of your primary worries. On my initial day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day hiding in my room, too scared to step outside and meet others. However, today, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships here at university and within my program. I’ve cultivated a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I take away from this? I learned that making a bold move at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events will arise to facilitate your connections with others. I also realized that being true to yourself is essential. With such a diverse array of people in the course and university, you are sure to find those who connect with you.

Another challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few strategies assisted me in navigating that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone is facing similar struggles. If you find something confusing, I can almost guarantee that there are others who also do. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out to your classmates and the faculty for help!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire for you to thrive and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They understand our struggles and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully leverage the support services until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps previously – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with the faculty, and it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the aid provided. You can never have too much support!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often unjustified and can be eased with the support available from staff and fellow students. It’s illustrated that I’m never solitary and has taught me how to savor my experience amidst pressures such as exams and assignments.
