Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my historically timid and reserved persona was used to. Looking back on the previous academic year, I recognize a path of personal development, obstacles, and a significant amount of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be a significant worry for you. On the initial day of settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the commencement of classes, I spent the day cloistered in my room, too daunted to venture out and socialize. Now, I am proud to say I have found some of the finest friends I’ve ever had at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with others in comparable situations. So, what did I discover? I realized that taking a chance at the start of the year is always beneficial. If you’re not entirely prepared or feeling at ease, fret not! There are numerous ice-breaker activities designed to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that authenticity is crucial. With such a wide-ranging array of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who align with you.

Another obstacle was juggling the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly an elevation from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. What assisted me was recalling that everyone is navigating the same waters. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly assure you others are experiencing the same dilemma. Thus, don’t hesitate to seek help. This might be the most vital skill to cultivate in your freshman year. Reach out for support from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are genuinely invested in your success and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They empathize with us and consistently communicate throughout the year about our worries. I didn’t fully avail myself of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking chances previously – I did take one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to establish connections with the faculty, which is invaluable. There are numerous opportunities to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university life is to leverage the assistance provided. You can never have an excess of support!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both preceding and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated through the various support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never solitary and to find joy despite stressors like examinations and deadlines.
