Ten months back, in October 2022, I felt anxious, fearful, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unknown was not something my formerly shy and introverted self was familiar with. Looking back on the past academic year, I recognize a phase rich with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and where do I stand now?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles I encountered was forging friendships. This is arguably one of the more daunting features of beginning university, and if you’re a soon-to-be student reading this, it may be one of your primary worries. On my inaugural day moving into my housing, a few days ahead of classes starting, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Sitting here today, I can proudly assert that I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships I’ve ever known, right here at this university and through this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all sparked by casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I realized that it’s always beneficial to take a bold step at the year’s commencement. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events designed to help you connect with others. I also discovered that if you could be one thing, simply be yourself. With such a diverse range of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to meet people like you.

Another challenge I grappled with was the intensity of the workload and complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting isn’t always conducive to your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few things aided me during that sensation—one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar feelings. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly guarantee that others also don’t comprehend it. Therefore, seek assistance. This could be the most critical lesson to learn in your first year. Don’t hesitate to reach out to your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are invested in your success and understand the struggles that students encounter. They relate to students and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had made use of it earlier. I referenced taking leaps previously—I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to get to know the staff, and it’s truly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My key lesson from this aspect of university is to leverage the support that is available. There’s no such thing as excessive help!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are commonly unfounded and can be eased with the abundant support mechanisms provided by staff and fellow students. It’s demonstrated that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
