Just ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. As a first-year student, I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering. Embracing the unknown was not something my previously shy and reserved nature was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what have I gained from this year, and where do I stand now?

One of the initial and most intimidating challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This is undeniably one of the more fearsome aspects of starting university, and if you’re reading this as a potential student, it may be among your greatest worries. On my first day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the term’s commencement, I devoted the entire day concealing myself in my room because I was too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. Yet, as I sit here today, I can proudly state that I’ve made some of the closest friends I’ve ever had, at this university and in this course. I’ve created a second family at Imperial, and it all began with some casual conversations with people in identical circumstances. So, what have I gleaned? I discovered that taking a chance at the start of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaker opportunities and events will be available to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that if you can be one thing, be true to yourself. With so many diverse individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to find others who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the amount of work and difficulty of the material. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger step from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere isn’t always easy for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several factors assisted me during that time, one being the acknowledgement that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you that others are equally confused. So, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students face difficulties. They show empathy towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I mentioned making leaps earlier – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to get acquainted with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to seize the help that’s available to you. You can never have too much support!

In general, this year has demonstrated to me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are nearly always unjustified and can be eased with the numerous support options offered by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has shown me how to enjoy myself in tandem with stress sources like exams and deadlines.
