By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Just ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was a far cry from what my previously timid and reserved nature had encountered. Looking back now, I recognize a year abundant with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting facets of embarking on university life, and if you’re an upcoming student, it might weigh heavily on your mind. On my moving-in day, just days before classes kicked off, I isolated myself in my room the entire day, too fearful to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced, here at this university and within this program. At Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, all stemming from light conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what wisdom have I gained? I realized that taking the plunge at the beginning of the year is essential. If you’re not completely prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There will be plenty of opportunities for ice-breaking and events to help you bond with others. I also learned that if there’s one thing you should be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find others who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was definitely noticeable, and in some aspects, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can certainly take a toll on your self-esteem; you might observe your peers studying and start feeling inadequate. A few things helped me navigate this, particularly the realization that everyone faces similar challenges. If you’re grappling with a concept, I can almost assure you that others are too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson learned during the first year. Reach out for help from both your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty within Materials is exceptional. They genuinely desire for you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They empathize and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our challenges. Although I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had done so sooner. I spoke earlier about taking leaps – I made one at the year’s onset by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university life is to leverage the assistance provided. You can never have too much support!

In summary, this year has imparted the lesson that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be eased through the extensive support options available from staff and fellow students. It has demonstrated that I am never alone and has shown me how to relish my experiences despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
