Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Immersing myself in the unfamiliar wasn’t something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current state?
One of the primary and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as a potential student, it might be among your greatest concerns. On my initial day moving into my lodging, a few days prior to the start of classes, I spent the whole day cooped up in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. Yet, sitting here today, I can assertively claim that I’ve forged some of the most remarkable friendships I’ve ever had, both at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what have I discovered? I learned that it is always beneficial to take a bold step at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t worry! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and activities to aid you in connecting with others. I also learned that if you can embody one thing, be your authentic self. With such a diverse group of individuals across the program and institution, you are sure to encounter others like yourself.
Another hurdle was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting isn’t always easy for your self-esteem; you might observe your peers studying and feel insufficient. Several factors assisted me in navigating that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is sharing the same experience. If you’re struggling to grasp something, I can almost assure you that there are others who are also finding it difficult. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most critical lesson to take away from your first year. Ask for help from both your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to flourish and recognize that students face challenges. They empathize with us and maintain regular communication throughout the year regarding our struggles. I didn’t really utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had availed myself of it sooner. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I took one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to get acquainted with the staff, and it is undoubtedly among the best actions you can undertake for yourself! My main takeaway from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the support available. You can never have too much assistance!
In summary, this year has imparted the lesson that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated with the various support resources offered by faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never truly alone and how to savor my experiences despite the pressures like exams and deadlines.
