By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about my future as I embarked on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Immersing myself in a new experience was atypical for my previously reserved nature. Looking back now, the year brought immense personal development, challenges, and enjoyment. What insights have I gained, and where do I currently stand?

One of the prime hurdles was forging friendships, a daunting endeavor for new university students. On my initial day of accommodation, I remained in my room, too intimidated to interact with others. Now, I can assertively claim I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships here at university. I discovered a second family at Imperial by engaging in casual conversations with classmates. I realized that taking a bold step at the onset is advantageous, and if you’re not prepared, numerous ice-breaker events are available to assist. Being authentic is crucial, as you’ll encounter like-minded individuals within the diverse student population.

Another difficulty was the level of workload and complexity of content, a significant increase from A-levels, with a distinct transition from the first to the second term. It’s simple to feel inadequate, but keep in mind, everyone shares the same experience. If you’re struggling with something, others likely are as well, so seek assistance. This is vital in the first year, whether from fellow students or faculty.

The faculty in Materials are supportive and understanding, keeping communication open with students throughout the year. I didn’t utilize pastoral support until later on, but I wish I had done so earlier. I took a chance by becoming a year well-being representative, which aided me in connecting with the staff, a rewarding experience. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s advantageous to make the most of the assistance available.

This year revealed to me that the anxieties preceding university are frequently baseless and can be eased with support from both faculty and peers. I’ve come to understand that I’m never alone and can find enjoyment even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
