Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Plunging into the unfamiliar was far from what my previously timid and introverted nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?
One of the foremost and most intimidating hurdles was making new friends. This is often one of the most intimidating parts of starting university, and if you are an incoming student, it could be your primary concern. On my inaugural day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term’s commencement, I spent the entirety of the day concealed in my room, far too daunted to venture out and engage with others. Today, I can proudly state that I have developed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced, both at this university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. What did I discover? It’s advantageous to take the plunge at the year’s outset. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breakers and events to facilitate connections with others. Additionally, if you can be anything, be genuine. With such a wide array of people throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.
Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a clear transition from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even steeper transition from the first term to the second. Being propelled into such an environment can challenge your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel out of place. Several things aided me through this, one being the assurance that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re struggling to comprehend something, I can almost guarantee others are facing the same issue. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the most vital lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out for help from classmates and faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire for you to succeed and are aware of the difficulties students face. They show empathy and maintain consistent communication with us regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had done so earlier. I alluded to taking risks previously – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to utilize the support provided. You can never obtain too much!
In summary, this year has illuminated the fact that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated with the variety of support options available through staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never isolated and how to have fun despite stressors such as exams and deadlines.
