Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my formerly shy and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a considerable amount of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and where do I find myself now?
One of the earliest and most formidable obstacles was forging friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more intimidating facets of starting university, and if you’re reading this as a potential student, it may be one of your major anxieties. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days before the term commenced, I spent the whole day cocooned in my room, too daunted to emerge and meet others. Yet, sitting here today, I can confidently assert that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this program. I’ve created a second family at Imperial, beginning with casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what have I taken away from this? I discovered that taking a leap at the start of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel completely ready or at ease, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaker opportunities and events will be available to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that above all, you should be yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals across the course and university, you are bound to encounter people who resonate with you.
Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the subject matter. There was indeed a significant transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being placed into such an environment can sometimes be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate those feelings, one of which was the reminder that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you that at least a few others share your confusion. Therefore, do not hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to embrace in the first year. Seek help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and are aware that students face difficulties. They show understanding towards students and maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the year about our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps at the beginning; I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to get acquainted with the faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My key takeaway from this dimension of university life is to seize the help that’s offered to you. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are almost always unwarranted and can be alleviated with the myriad support options provided by faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never isolated and how to find enjoyment amidst sources of stress such as exams and deadlines.
