Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Stepping into the unknown was not something my previously introverted and reserved nature was familiar with. Looking back now, I realize I’ve experienced a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and immense enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand today?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was making friends. This is frequently regarded as one of the most daunting facets of commencing university, and if you are an incoming student, it may be a major worry for you. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the academic term starting, I spent the whole day confined to my room, daunted by the idea of venturing out and introducing myself to others. Today, I can proudly say that I’ve forged some of the best friendships here at university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, which all began with casual conversations with individuals in comparable circumstances. So, what have I realized? I discovered that taking a bold step at the beginning of the year is always rewarding. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker chances and events to facilitate connections with others. I also recognized that being authentic is essential. With such a diverse group of people across the course and the university, you’re guaranteed to meet those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be daunting for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel subpar. Several factors helped me overcome that sentiment, one being the realization that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you find something perplexing, I can almost assure you that others do as well. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the single most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Approach your peers and the staff for support!

That leads me to my next point. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They show understanding and keep in touch with us consistently throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so sooner. I mentioned taking bold steps earlier – I took one at the start of the year by becoming a well-being representative for the year. This role provided me the opportunity to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are myriad ways to engage with staff, and it’s one of the most advantageous things you can pursue for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university is to leverage the support available. You can never have too much!

All in all, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be alleviated through the support provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never truly alone and how to have fun in spite of pressures like exams and deadlines.
