Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainties about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a significant amount of enjoyment! But what insights did this year provide, and what is my current status?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was establishing friendships. This often ranks as one of the most daunting parts of commencing university, and if you’re a future student, it may be a significant worry. On my inaugural day moving into my residence, just days prior to the term’s start, I spent the whole day confined to my room, too fearful to venture out and meet others. Today, though, I can assertively say that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships here at university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all sparked by casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what lesson did I glean? I discovered that taking a leap at the year’s beginning is advantageous. If you aren’t feeling ready or at ease, don’t fret! There are numerous ice-breaking chances and events to facilitate connections with others. I also realized that being true to yourself is essential. With such a diverse crowd at the university and in the course, you’re sure to find those who connect with you.

Another obstacle was the volume of work and its complexity. There was a distinct transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can challenge your self-esteem; you might observe peers studying and feel inadequate. Several factors aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If you struggle to grasp a concept, I can nearly assure you that others are too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial ability to cultivate in your first year. Get help from classmates and faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely wish for your success and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They are empathetic and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year about our issues. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. As I mentioned about taking leaps – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is priceless. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and it’s one of the most beneficial actions you can undertake! My primary lesson is to leverage the help available. There’s no harm in seeking more!

In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated by the support from faculty and fellow students. It has illustrated that I’m never isolated and has shown me how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
