Authored by Dawson La, MEng in Materials Science and Engineering

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my previously introverted and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is often one of the most daunting parts of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be your greatest worry. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, just days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too shy to go out and introduce myself to others. Today, however, I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever known, here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with light conversation with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what was the lesson? I learned that taking a step forward at the start of the year is always the best option. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample opportunities for ice-breaking and events to help you bond with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, be authentic. With such a diverse array of individuals across the program and the university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was definitely a noticeable leap from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere can take a toll on your self-esteem; you might observe peers studying and feel inferior. A few factors assisted me during that period, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you’re unsure about something, I can nearly assure you that others are too. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Don’t hesitate to reach out to your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They relate to us and keep open lines of communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I mentioned taking leaps previously – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to engage with the staff, and it’s one of the most advantageous things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to take full advantage of the assistance provided. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has demonstrated to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be alleviated with the support offered by faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment despite pressures like examinations and due dates.
