By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious, frightened, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a fresh student. Embracing the unknown was not something my previously shy and introverted self was familiar with. Looking back on the past year, I recognize a time filled with personal development, obstacles, and lots of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and where do I find myself now?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was creating friendships. This is frequently one of the most nerve-wracking aspects of beginning university, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it might be one of your primary worries. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days before classes started, I spent the entire day secluded in my room because I was too daunted to step out and meet others. However, sitting here today, I can assertively say that I’ve built some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, both at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it merely required engaging in casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that it’s always beneficial to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker opportunities and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that if you can embody one thing, be true to yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals across the program and university, you are sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the course workload and complexity of the content. There was indeed a significant leap from A-levels, and in many ways, an even greater transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can sometimes challenge your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few elements aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating similar experiences. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you that others are struggling with it as well. So, ask for assistance. This could be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Seek support from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is remarkable. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They sympathize with students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I spoke about taking leaps before – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to familiarize myself with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My principal takeaway from this facet of university life is to make the most of the assistance available to you. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has illustrated to me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are often unwarranted and can be mitigated with the various support resources provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment despite stressors such as exams and deadlines.
