Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was poised to begin my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Stepping into the unfamiliar was not something my formerly timid and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current position?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of beginning university, and if you are an incoming student, it may be among your foremost worries. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day tucked away in my room, too scared to venture out and make introductions. Now, I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced in this university and program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what have I learned? I’ve realized that taking that initial leap at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel entirely ready or at ease, don’t stress! There will be abundant ice-breaking chances and activities to assist you in connecting with others. I also found that if you can embody one quality, be yourself. With such a diverse crowd in the program and university, you’re sure to encounter individuals similar to you.

Another obstacle was the intensity of the coursework and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a shift from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such a challenging environment can affect your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several factors aided me in overcoming that feeling, one being the realization that everyone is experiencing the same situation. If something isn’t clear to you, I can almost assure you that others feel the same way. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Request help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They relate to students and maintain open communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I indeed took one at the onset of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to engage with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for your own benefit! My key takeaway from this aspect of university life is to seize the support offered to you. You can never have too much!

On a broader note, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are frequently unjustified and can be eased through the numerous support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It’s has taught me that I am never solitary and how to find enjoyment even amid stressors like exams and deadlines.
