Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with apprehension, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was poised to embark on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved self was prepared for. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, hurdles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
One of the first and most formidable hurdles I encountered was forging friendships. This is certainly one of the more frightening parts of beginning university, and if you’re perusing this as an incoming student, it may be one of your primary worries. On the day I moved into my residence, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too daunted to step outside and meet people. However, today, I can proudly declare that I’ve made some of the most incredible friends I’ve ever had, here at this university and in this program. I have crafted a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with light conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what have I learned? I’ve learned that taking a risk at the beginning of the year is always worthwhile. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking occasions and events to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, be yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to find like-minded people.
Another obstacle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a significant advancement from A-levels, and in many ways, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrown into such a setting can be hard on your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is facing the same challenges. If something doesn’t make sense to you, I can almost assure you that others do not grasp it as well. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Request help from classmates and the staff!
This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are invested in your success and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They are understanding and maintain regular communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t truly take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had made use of it earlier. I spoke of taking leaps earlier – I did take one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for your benefit! My main lesson from this aspect of university life is to make the most of the assistance you are provided. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has enlightened me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often unwarranted and can be eased with the numerous support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never isolated and how to find enjoyment amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
