Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I experienced feelings of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of embarking on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not what my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize a period marked by personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyable moments! So, what have I gained from this year, and what is my current situation?
One of the initial and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more nerve-wracking facets of commencing university, and for those of you reading this as potential students, it could be one of your primary concerns. On my first day of moving into my residence, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day retreating to my room because I felt too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself to others. However, today I can say with confidence that I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever had, here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all started with casual conversations with individuals in similar positions. So, what did I find out? I discovered that taking a bold step at the beginning of the year is always a good idea. If you don’t feel completely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities for ice-breaking and events to facilitate your interaction with others. I also learned that if you can be anything, be authentic. With such a diverse array of individuals across the program and the institution, you are bound to connect with those who resonate with you.
Another challenge was the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater shift from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can be challenging for your self-assurance; seeing others study may leave you feeling insufficient. A few factors helped me navigate that sentiment, one being the reassurance that everyone shares the same experience. If you’re struggling to comprehend something, I can nearly assure you that there are at least a handful of others who also don’t grasp it. So, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your fellow students and faculty!
This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to excel and acknowledge that students face challenges. They show understanding toward students and consistently communicate with us throughout the year concerning our concerns. I didn’t truly take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking bold steps – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and it is definitely one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university is to seize the support being offered to you. You can never have too much assistance!
Overall, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be alleviated by the multitude of support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone, and it has shown me how to find enjoyment in tandem with stressors like exams and deadlines.
