Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself feeling anxious, frightened, and unsure about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Embracing the unknown was not something my previously shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year packed with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is often one of the most daunting parts of beginning university life, and if you’re a prospective student, it may be a significant worry. On my first day moving into my accommodation, just a few days prior to the term starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself to others. Today, however, I can proudly assert that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever had here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in comparable situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a bold step at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be countless ice-breaker opportunities and events to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that if you can embody anything, be yourself. With a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to encounter like-minded people.

Another challenge was managing the workload and the difficulty of the content. There was certainly an increase in intensity from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being thrown into such an environment can shake your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same challenge. If you struggle to grasp something, I can nearly guarantee that others are as well. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to absorb in your first year. Reach out for help from both peers and staff!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They relate to students and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I mentioned taking leaps previously – I did take one at the year’s outset by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are ample opportunities to engage with the staff, and it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to make the most of the support available. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has illuminated for me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are frequently unwarranted and can be mitigated by the support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find joy amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
