Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with apprehension, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I can see a year of personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current position?
One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting facets of beginning university, and if you are a prospective student, it may be a significant worry. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the entire day in my room, too frightened to go out and introduce myself. However, today I can assert that I’ve made some of the best friends here at university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a risk at the beginning of the year is essential. If you’re not ready or feel uneasy, it’s alright! There will be numerous ice-breakers and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that being true to yourself is vital. With such a diverse range of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded people.
Another difficulty was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was a clear transition from A-levels, and an even more significant jump from the first to the second term. Being in such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inferior. What aided me was recalling that everyone is in the same situation. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you that others don’t either. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This could be the most crucial lesson during the first year. Seek support from classmates and staff!
This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the challenges students encounter. They show empathy and maintain open communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff, which is invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the greatest things you can do! My primary takeaway is to make the most of the available assistance. You’ll never have too much support!
All in all, this year revealed to me that feelings of anxiety about university are often unwarranted and can be lessened with the help offered by staff and peers. It taught me that I’m never truly alone and how to enjoy myself despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
