Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my formerly reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I realize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and where do I stand now?
A significant and initially intimidating hurdle was befriending others. This aspect of commencing university is often overwhelming, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be a primary concern. On my moving-in day, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the entire time in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet new people. Today, though, I can proudly claim that I’ve forged some of the best friendships here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with those in comparable situations. So, what have I discovered? It’s advantageous to take the plunge at the beginning of the year. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker opportunities and events designed to facilitate connections. I’ve also come to realize that authenticity is essential. With such a diverse array of individuals in the course and university, you’re likely to encounter others who share your interests.
Another challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a progression from A-levels, and, in some respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can take a toll on your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few strategies aided me through this sensation, one being the acknowledgment that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you find something difficult to grasp, I can nearly assure you that many others are too. Thus, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to embrace in your first year. Reach out for help from both peers and faculty!
This leads me to my next observation. The staff in Materials is remarkable. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend that students may encounter difficulties. They show understanding towards students while maintaining consistent communication about our challenges. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I took a significant one at the outset of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s among the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary lesson from this segment of university life is to capitalize on the assistance provided. You can never have too much support!
In summary, this year has illuminated the fact that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated by the numerous support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find joy in conjunction with pressures such as exams and deadlines.
